Our St. Joseph’s Day feast, in collaboration with the Italian American program of the Heinz History Center, was a huge success! A big thank you to our guests who celebrated with us.

Originally observed as Father’s Day in Italy, St. Joseph’s Day holds a special place in the hearts of many. Legend has it that the origins of the holiday can be traced back to the Middle Ages in Sicily, when it served as a day of feasting and gratitude during times of famine. In homage to St. Joseph’s profession as a carpenter, the Sicilian people lovingly adorned their dishes with toasted breadcrumbs, believed to symbolize sawdust, and bread formed in shapes that expressed his profession, such as a ladder and a staff.

During modern times, St. Joseph’s Day continues to be observed with reverence and joy, particularly in Italian and Italian-American communities. Traditionally, celebrations include elaborate feasts featuring an array of delicious foods, as well as religious ceremonies and processions. Beyond its religious significance, St. Joseph’s Day has also come to symbolize themes of fatherhood, labor, and immigration, making it a cherished occasion for many around the world. It serves as a reminder of the importance of family bonds, community solidarity, feeding the poor, and gratitude for the blessings of life.
