Born out of an event supporting New Orleans’ musicians after Hurricane Katrina and Pittsburgh communities after Hurricane Ivan, the Cultural Gumbo helps creatives and grassroots projects thrive while raising funds for our shared community space: the Food + Energy Hub in Millvale.
Unfortunately in the lead up to this event, disaster struck on January 30, 2023 as our facility experienced a significant electrical fire in the basement. The damage is significant and the building’s mission-based tenants will be displaced for some time as clean up occurs. Fortunately our community is strong and we plan to rebuild as quickly and safely as possible.
The good news is that our friends and neighbors at Mr Smalls have welcomed us to make sure that the show goes on! New Sun Rising and Sprezzatura are pleased to present the Cultural Gumbo, including New Orleans inspired food, live music from Red Beans & Rice and Brassholio, and some of Pittsburgh’s best visual artists including Marlon Gist, JY Originals, and screen printing with Quaishawn Whitlock. New Sun Rising is also excited to announce our 2023 Vibrancy Awardees for culture: #notwhitecollective and Unshakeable Motherhood. Support local culture and help us raise funds for fire recovery and rebuilding the Hub as an even better place to create, connect, and celebrate together.
Advance tickets are now available for a discount. $30 at the door. Food, drinks, and art will be available for purchase during the event. All proceeds will support fire recovery efforts and affected tenants at the Millvale Food + Energy Hub.
